Music: Rock/Pop Alasdair Roberts w/ Charalambides and Helene Renaut

Though Alasdair Roberts' records have the imprint of traditional folk, they're hardly amateur productions. Indeed, the singer-guitarist details alternative tunings (a different one for each song) in the liner notes of his latest, The Amber Gathers, and is obviously erudite when it comes to British Isles and Appalachiam forms (his previous effort, No Earthly Man, consisted of traditional murder ballads). He may lose some distinctiveness for this attention to detail, but Roberts certainly has a precocious vocabulary to match Joanna Newsom's, and a penchant for understated phrasing worthy of Will Oldham (all three are Drag City labelmates). Intrepid psych-folk travelers Charlambides open the show, most likely with a drone.
