Don't be put off by their songs' placements in Wal-Mart ads — starving musicians gotta eat, you know — Band of Horses are the same earnest, hardworking dudes they always were. And their new album ain't half bad, either: Cease to Begin sees new influences like "different tempos" and "economy" seeping into Ben Bridwell's usually dirge-y songwriting in support of those aching, reverbed-out melodies and solid, country-rock foundations. Openers the Drones hail from Australia and are the sort of perennially underrated, meat-and-potatoes rock band that's all too easily drowned out in the sea of indie whimsy. If dark, growled vocals, shifty interplay, and heartbreaking gutter poetry are your style, you can't do any better than these guys.
