Art "The There, There"

Although Gertrude Stein's quip that in Oakland, "there was no there, there," is nearly a century old, the phrase's longevity underscores Oakland's ongoing attempt to unify its numerous, disparate cultural threads. Writer and curator Theo Konrad Auer has organized an exhibition of the East Bay's artistic new blood — including Derek Weisberg's looming, hip-hop-influenced figures, Crystal Morey's placid and elegantly formed ceramic Daphnes, and Casey Jex Smith's abstract drawings of geometric phenomena. Highlighting the myriad art practices emerging out of the East Bay, the show indicates that Oakland's scene is anything but stagnant.
