Film Midnight Cowboy (1969)

In a sense, Midnight Cowboy was the Brokeback Mountain of its day. Both films are "gay westerns," in spirit if not geography, chronicling their loner protagonists' struggles with culturally mandated forms of sexuality. Midnight Cowboy's Ennis and Jack are Joe "the stud" (Jon Voight) and his clingy, effeminate companion Ratso (Dustin Hoffman), lost souls and de-facto soul mates in a Manhattan riddled with seedy squats and john-filled alleys. Hoffman's heartbreaking performance marked a milestone in his career, but also helped the public connect to the film despite its then-controversial X-rating.
