Hannah Takes the Stairs may be the first collective effort to emerge from the "true-blue indie" movement burgeoning in the last decade — that is, films conceived so independently and so wistfully that they often fail to achieve theatrical distribution despite their many merits. Directed by Joe Swanberg (LOL, 2006) and co-starring Andrew Bujalski (Funny Ha Ha, 2002) and Mark Duplass (The Puffy Chair, 2005), the film follows Hannah (Greta Gerwig, also a co-writer) as she fumbles through her shifting sexual desires and creative ambitions in a haze of halting exchanges.
