Hal Ashby was hardly your typical Hollywood director, producing several memorably off-center movies during his career — that is, after beginning his adult life by breaking away from a Mormon community. Shampoo is one of Ashby's best, with a caustic script by Robert Towne (Chinatown), and a pitch-perfect performance by Warren Beatty as a sexed-up LA hairdresser navigating love, failure, and Nixon Time.
