It would be a cop-out to say that grindcore demigod Justin Broadrick's transition from metal superstar to My Bloody Valentine minion is a function of age. It's more like angst finally outpaced the former Godflesh guru's aggression as once-raging muscles went limp in the face of life's frustrations. His mind is definitely still vibrant, though: with Jesu, Broadrick broods more than bombards, as the haunting, desperate hum of smooth, shoegazey guitars billows over dark, ambient tones. Muddy vocals sway into the mix, while distant tinges of hope surface like light on the edge of a horizon — you just never quite know if it's the sun rising or ominously going down.
