Art Lucy McKenzie: New Work

Scottish painter Lucy McKenzie is a savvy image-maker, as interested in the history of images as in creating new ones. At SFMOMA, McKenzie turns her keen eye to Glasgow's glorious 19th-century architecture and decorative-arts tradition, typified by Charles Rennie Mackintosh's Art Noveau designs. In a suite of large-scale canvases, McKenzie renders specific interiors — fireplaces, tea rooms, salons — in a muted palette. The paintings are arranged like stage sets in the middle of the gallery, opening them to inspection from all sides. In another provocative move aimed at conflating art and design, McKenzie invited her peer, the Scottish fashion designer Beca Lipscombe, to set up a boutique featuring her fall collection in the neighboring gallery, accompanied by McKenzie's pared-down drawings of the designs.
