Having designed much of the album art for '80s anarcho-peace punks Crass, Gee Vaucher continues to turn her straight razor on the visual culture of consumer society. Her collage-based works — the missing link between surrealism and Richard Hamilton — are disturbing, sarcastic funhouse mirrors reflecting and distorting western civilization's capacity for greed and injustice. What perfect timing then (e.g., the holiday-season hothouse of conspicuous consumption and enforced bonhomie) for Jack Hanley Gallery to launch this retrospective of Vaucher's work, which includes her Crass pieces as well as a few from her groundbreaking art zine International Anthem.
