Eight hundred years ago, Mevlana Jelaleddin Rumi cultivated a "mystical union" between dervishes' whirls and his language's whorls. The Sufi poet is well known for his way with words, and the Mevlevi Sufi Order, founded by Rumi's followers, still draws inspiration for their dance and music from his writing. UNESCO has declared 2007 the Year of Rumi, and the Mevlevi Order of America's Whirling Dervishes celebrate with a performance at the Palace of Fine Arts featuring dance, classical Sufi music, and traditional white garb.
