Art Pioneers

Amid its recent spat of new exhibitions and edgy curation, CCA's marvelous Wattis Institute pays aesthetical tithes to those Bay Area artists whose vanguard practices paved the way. Pioneers is equal parts group exhibition and cultural survey, umbilically linking the dual histories of San Francisco's innovative creative activity with the progressive politics of its frontierspeople. While weaving any multigenerational analysis does risk overgeneralization, the Institute draws on such a strong group of figures — including Ant Farm, the Cockettes, Robert Bechtle, Bruce Conner, Ulla von Brandenburg, and Jay DeFeo — that Pioneers argues its thesis cunningly.
