Rickie Lee Jones once described her upbringing as "lower-middle-class-hillbilly-hipster," a social niche that certainly fostered her solid, heartfelt sound. Combining jazz-inflected pop, blues, and soulful rock, Lee Jones has commanded a stable fan base for almost 30 years now. She released her debut in 1979, won a Grammy for Best New Artist the next year, and followed that with a string of modest hits. Her easygoing eclecticism still finds support in the younger generation; her latest album, The Sermon on Exposition Boulevard, drew respectable sales and invited comparison to Van Morrison's Astral Weeks.
