American filmmaker David Lynch has become increasingly inscrutable as he actively promotes transcendental meditation and releases ever more enigmatic works — namely 2006's Inland Empire. The documentary Lynch doesn't try to explicate its subject — something the director has always discouraged — but instead focuses on his everyday process. The camera trails him as he coaches actress Laura Dern, curses at interns, and tracks down monkeys. Obscurely credited to "blackANDwhite" (and obliquely credited to Lynch himself), the film doesn't explore the director's oeuvre so much as offer some intriguing views from its trenches — a tantalizing prospect for Lynch devotees.
