- Juju Factory
Berkeley's Pacific Film Archive has picked the cream of the NYC-based African Film Festival's crop for this monthlong series. Opening night belongs to Abderrahmane Sissako's Bamako (2006), an acclaimed agitprop courtroom drama in which Africa gets the chance to press charges against the World Bank, making light of international bureaucracy's darkest tangles. The minifestival also spotlights a pair of earlier Sissako films (2002's Waiting for Happiness and 1998's Life on Earth), in addition to a documentary on Cameroonian prisons (The Forgotten Men, 2003), a portrait of Congolese intellectuals in exile (Juju Factory, 2006), and a tribute to Ousmane Sembène, the Senegalese master director who died last year at the age of 84.
