June 26, 1964: Life magazine proclaims San Francisco "the gay capital" in its landmark spread, "Homosexuality in America." The cover photo featured the masculine denizens of SOMA dive bar the Tool Box mirrored by muralist Chuck Arnett's lineup of knights in black leather on the wall behind them. Arnett's bar paintings — graphically bold and often boldly graphic — were the visual analog to the wild and woolly sexual terrain Gay Liberation would help open, and which the Life article only pruriently hinted at. Lautrec in Leather is a meticulously researched and curated tribute to Arnett's progressive, raunch-filled vision.
