Over the course of several books and articles, Michael Pollan has emerged as a voice of reason amid the sloganeering that overruns food culture and politics. In his bestseller The Botany of Desire, he explored the way four plants (apples, tulips, marijuana, and potatoes) evolved along with changes in human populations and consumption models. For The Omnivore's Dilemma, he traced the origins and pathways of four meals, in the process stirring a lively debate with John Mackey, the CEO of Whole Foods. Pollan visits City Arts & Lectures to discuss his upcoming book, In Defense of Food, a critique of an American diet rife with items an earlier generation wouldn't even recognize as edible.
