Rarely in the history of cinema has a director-actor collaboration been as thrillingly productive as that of Akira Kurosawa and Toshirô Mifune. Even more in sync than John Ford and John Wayne, the Japanese pair generated cathartic drama in all of their projects. Besides their famous jidai-geki samurai pictures, Kurosawa and Mifune also experimented with modern-dress tales like High and Low and Stray Dog — but they will be forever associated with the Shakespeare-touched action epics Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, and Throne of Blood. It takes an impressive screen like the Castro's to reveal all of the visual pleasures of these sweeping classics.
