Some advice for aspiring dictators and repressive regimes worldwide: think carefully before banishing artists; it rarely proves to be a good idea. Formed in 2000 by a group of film and television artists forced out of their homeland by the Taliban, the Exile Theatre specializes in plays that reflect the volatile sociopolitical issues plaguing Afghanistan. Having fled the relative safety of Peshawar after its productions caught the attention of Pakistani police, the company now teams with Bond Street Theater to present Beyond the Mirror, the first-ever Afghani-American theater collaboration. Blending recent history, familial memory, and primary accounts with mythology and video, the work meditates on the balance between today's devastation and tomorrow's promise.
