No Nude Men Productions brings Matthew Lewis' 1796 Gothic novel of broken vows and grisly murder to the stage. Stuart Bousel, who guided the company's gender-bending version of Hamlet in 2006, directs a cast of Bay Area theater regulars including Ryan Hayes as Ambrosio, the titular priest. Though a man of the cloth forcing himself on women or committing homicide is less likely to shock contemporary audiences than in Lewis' time, Bousel recognizes that Ambrosio is as familiar a rogue as any scandal-embroiled politician or starlet-gone-wild ripped from the tabloids. As Lewis' anti-hero reminds us, it's still sobering to watch the powerful fall.
