Zellerbach Hall says…

Despite the criticism leveled by his country's literati that his novels read too much like works in translation, Haruki Murakami has nevertheless become Japan's leading novelist. For better or for worse, those "invasive" Western influences — jazz and pop music, Raymond Chandler's hardboiled stories, and even Colonel Sanders — are the heart and soul of Murakami's writing. And though his ingredients might seem trivial to some, Murakami often engages subjects that have shaped contemporary Japan, including the Kobe earthquake and the Aum Shinrikyo cult's gas attacks on Tokyo's subway system. Tonight, Murakami reads and discusses his works with Tokyo University lecturer and Japanamerica author Roland Kelts.
