It's anyone guess as to whether Andy Warhol ever imagined that his silk-screen portfolio Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century would warrant a stand-alone museum exhibition — let alone one at the newly christened Contemporary Jewish Museum. But, like most of Warhol's work, this ten-piece series is subject to reappraisal. The silk screens display a range of expressionistic color and geometrical play missing from earlier series like the famous Marilyn, but the blasé grouping of disparate icons — including Sigmund Freud, the Marx Brothers, Golda Meir, and Franz Kafka — suggests a "collect-all-ten" approach to the complex idea of a specifically Jewish brand of genius.
