With Cryptopsy succumbing to the metalcore epidemic, Kataklysm remain one of the only Canadian bands left standing from the '90s death-metal renaissance. The veteran head-crushers pound listeners into submission with mid-tempo, subtly melodic, down-tuned brutality, using double-kicks sparingly but effectively, and never being overly showy with their fretboard dexterity. Their latest album features some black metal-ish backing vocals, which explains why this tour's refreshingly diverse lineup includes formidable Norwegian black-metal/rock outfit Keep of Kalessin, Swiss folk metallers Eluveitie, and Maryland orthodox death-metal legends Dying Fetus.
