The curators of Dead Channels never fail to fully exploit — or graphically illustrate — the many senses of the phrase "gut-wrenching." From the genuinely creepy (Surveillance) to the completely over-the-top (Tokyo Gore Police) to the just plain ridiculous (Retardead), this year's lineup is not short on cinematic scare tactics, off-base humor, stage blood, or questionable taste. And while some of the titles may seem like jokes that write themselves (the bowling-alley-set slasher Gutterballs, for example), Dead Channels lands a major score with the US premiere of Nicolas Roeg's newest psycho-supernatural tale, Puffball, which sees Roeg reunited with Donald Sutherland for the first time since 1973's Don't Look Now.
