After being inundated with state-sponsored images of Beijing during the Olympics, Bay Area audiences can get a different perspective during Chinese filmmaker Ning Ying's weekend residency at the PFA. Ning's diffident, wry dramas unfold on the microcosmic scale of families and friends. Her preference for nonprofessional actors and location shooting recalls Italian neorealism, sharing their humanistic imperative in her Beijing Trilogy and 2005 hit Perpetual Motion (dubbed the Chinese Sex and the City). The Ning Ying residency follows the PFA's Jia Zhangke retrospective, and while Jia is the more acclaimed filmmaker, Ning's movies provide a uniquely cosmopolitan, feminine impression of China's rapid transformations.
