Director Tom Dean teams up with Vau de Vire Society choreographer Shannon Gaines to lend a modern spin to two Stravinsky compositions. The first, "A Soldier's Tale," is a classic Faustian story of a young soldier who trades the devil (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum's Mattias Bossi) his trusty violin in exchange for prosperity and power. Originally set during WWI, the opera has been reinvented for the current climate, trading the trenches of Europe for the deserts of Iraq. The opera is followed by the one-act humoresque Renard, a barnyard fable of a mischievous fox and the farm animals who exact revenge upon him. The playful piece was originally commissioned by Princess Edmond de Polignac to be performed in her parlor.
