Free-jazz pioneer Cecil Taylor shows no sign of slowing down as he approaches 80. Having played a slate of club and festival gigs this summer, tonight he displays his ferocious and protean approach to the piano in a far more meditative venue: Grace Cathedral. Taylor has shaped avant-garde jazz from its '50s inception and continues to expand the genre, intertwining beautiful melodies and rhythmic chords with dissonant notes. Each song builds and expands on the previous, and melodies have the freedom to change shape as they progress. It's best to abandon all expectations and simply listen.
