Conor Oberst couldn't have recorded his first solo effort in 12 years without help from a big ol' family band. Tapping the usual suspects — Rilo Kiley drummer Jason Boesel and Saddle Creek Records mainstay Nate Walcott — the Bright Eyes frontman holed up in Mexico for a month to work on the self-titled record. Like much of Bright Eyes' work, the album's Americana-inspired freak folk transports the listener to desolate western landscapes. Tumbleweeds drift in and out, evoking a dusty spirit that can only be captured below the border.
