Say what you will about the bumper stickers and his brash, cigar-chomping demeanor, but Kinky Friedman surely boosted his standing as a first-rank American satirist when he parlayed his eccentric appeal into a legitimate run at the Texas governorship in 2006. By the time Friedman slumped to a fourth-place finish, he'd already shaken up Austin with his punchy dismissals of divisive campaign tactics ("I'm not pro-life, and I'm not pro-choice. I'm pro-football."). Spurned but hardly chastened by the electorate, Friedman continues to work for change as the first (and likely last) Jewish Texan politico/country singer/mystery author.
