Equal parts Malcolm X and Abbie Hoffman, Dead Prez make hyper-intelligent and unflinchingly combative hip-hop that mixes progressive politics and thug life narratives. A Dave Chappelle fave — the comedian sang the duo's praises in his 2005 Block Party documentary — they pine hard for Public Enemy, tearing down racial disparities in government representation, healthcare, and public schools while simultaneously condemning the banality of mainstream rap. Today the group headlines Ed Rosenthal's Wonders of Cannabis alongside the likes of Joseph Israel, Ironmonk and the Band of Brotherz, and Triple Cobra.
