One of the largest one-day celebrations of Día de los Muertos in the US, this family-oriented event takes over whole blocks of Oakland's Fruitvale district. Aztec dancers, singers, and musicians entertain visitors strolling among the intimate altars constructed as tributes to departed loved ones. Meanwhile, white tents erected along the sidewalk lure visitors with delicious smells of pupusas, corn on the cob, and churos. A Bay Area favorite, this contemplative yet vibrant festival has taken place since the mid-'90s and is now in its 13th year.
