Marilynne Robinson has probably spent more time on single sentences than Stephen King has on entire novels, but when her books arrive, the prose sparkles with hard-earned wisdom. Twenty-four years separated Housekeeping and Gilead, Robinson's two contemplative novels of rural American life. Her descriptions of Midwestern landscapes — both spiritual and topographical — are without peer. Robinson visits City Arts & Lectures this evening to discuss her new novel, Home — although the longtime Iowa Writers' Workshop teacher's reflections on the life of a writer usually extend beyond her own work.
