In the introduction to their book on American ballads, The Rose and the Briar, Sean Wilentz and Greil Marcus write that, "no matter what form the ballad takes… more than one life is always at stake." And so, if all ballads are in some sense about death, none do the subject justice quite like the murder ballad. Acoustic haven the Starry Plough brings together a mixed band of singer/songwriters, including Conception Vessel One, Scott Simon, Fuzzy Cousins, Joe Rut, and more to sing the cruel fates of Pretty Polly, Stagger Lee, Tom Dooley, and a host of other moribund characters for this annual Halloween concert. American gothic never sounded so sweet.
