Shelter— as safe haven, and in the sense of “keeping something hidden” — provides narrative thrust and acts as a key motif in S. Pierre Yaméogo’s drama about the tragedy that the (mis)uses of tradition and superstition inflict on women’s lives in contemporary Burkina Faso. Delwende follows a young woman as she attempts to prove that her mother — expelled to a “witch village,” a hiding place for other outcast women — is innocent. While Yaméogo makes it clear where his feminist sympathies lie, he doesn’t let politics overshadow the nuances of his character’s conflicts.
