Oakland Museum of California's Chief Curator of Art, Philip Linhares, ignores the myth of a San Francisco/LA cultural divide and showcases some of SoCal's best and brightest in this survey of contemporary painters. The Date Farmers' salvaged-metal canvases and pop iconography evoke Mexican advertising art, while Don Suggs colorful concentric-ring paintings recall Kenneth Noland's target-like circle paintings. Steve Roden's abstractions are often influenced by his experimental sound work, while Loren Holland refracts elements of urban Chicano and African American culture into lush, Gauguin-like portraits that archly exoticize their subjects. And while group shows invariably leave out a few names, a visit to L.A. Paint is a far cheaper than a round-trip ticket to LAX.
