In China, the years 1978-1989 were a period of unparalleled change. Deng Xiaoping's policies modernized the economy, and artists, writers, and filmmakers produced a flurry of work that tackled the trauma of the preceding Cultural Revolution. The directors of this period, later identified as being part of Chinese cinema's Fourth Generation, made movies with alternative subject matter and style (despite the ever-present threat of government censorship) for a national audience starved for images. Following up their Half-Life of a Dream exhibit, SFMOMA screens some of these unsung milestones, which laid the groundwork for films from future stars such as Chen Kaige and Jia Zhangke.
