Tracy Turnblad and the "drapes" may have gone a bit more mainstream in the Broadway versions of John Waters films Hairspray (1988) and Cry-Baby (1990), but the filmmaker still cultivates his rep as an American auteur of everything raunchy, tacky, and campy. In Waters' "vaudeville-esque confessional," the man muses and rants onstage about his early artistic influences and cultural obsessions. For fans of his transgressive contributions to the cinema of bad taste, This Filthy World is a chance to get an unfiltered glimpse into the mind of the anti-conformist kid from suburban Baltimore who grew into the man William S. Burroughs dubbed the "Pope of Trash."
