The French invented the art of the moving image over a century ago, and they haven't stopped innovating onscreen since. The San Francisco Film Society's latest fest, French Cinema Now, proves as much with its slate of contemporary Gallic films. It kicks off with Arnaud Desplechin's newest, the hilarious and touching A Christmas Tale. The Cannes nominee, starring Catherine Deneuve and Mathieu Amalric, tells the story of a dysfunctional family forced together by its matriarch's emergency bone-marrow transplant. Other festival highlights include Valeria Bruni Tedeschi's Actresses, a fresh take on the complexities of middle age; and the retrospective Six in Paris (1965), a cinematic ode to the city of love from top new-wave directors.
