For many political dissidents, the creation of "autonomous zones" often represents a significant stepping-stone in the march toward independence from a dominant government. But for San Francisco artist Jay Nelson, establishing a means of off-the-grid self-sufficiency requires more romantic and aesthetic — though no less political — tactics. In his new exhibition, Nelson introduces a series of his ingeniously rigged mobile domiciles — including a car camper, acorn-shaped tree house, and scooter/living pod — each of which is impressive for both its execution and apparent pragmatism. Nearby are Nelson's paintings of majestic vistas that pay homage to 19th-century nature studies while subtly tweaking those illustrations' representations of the sublime.
