Though the raffish Ricky Jay is probably best known for his acting roles in Deadwood and David Mamet's movies, he is first and foremost an erudite, entertaining practitioner of the magic arts. He recently lost his Guinness World Record for playing-card throwing (he once tossed one 190 feet), but his sleight-of-hand skills remain untouchable. This magician is as much historian as showman; a few years ago, he supplied the contents for a YBCA exhibition of broadsides dating back to P.T. Barnum's sideshows. Jay's historical acumen illuminates the long development of deception in a way that learning how a trick works doesn't begin to reveal.
