After popular exhibits on the clothing of Vivenne Westwood and socialite Nan Kempner, the de Young has struck the mother lode: a retrospective of the four decade-plus career of the late, great Yves Saint Laurent. Laurent's passing in June marked the end of one of the most successful and protean careers in a notoriously unstable business. Laurent redefined haute couture as modern, powerful, and sexy — a description that certainly applies to the more than 120 pieces on display. From slinky evening tuxedos to the gorgeous confections of feather and crystal that adorned clients such as Catherine Deneuve and Lauren Bacall, this sumptuous celebration of one of the great artists of the 20th century is a true embarrassment of riches.
