As pundits draw parallels between Obama and Lincoln on the evening news, everyone else is brushing up on their 19th-century history, including artist Theresa Ganz. Her new show at Steven Wolf taps into the Civil War zeitgeist with collages inspired by Walt Whitman and Herman Melville's poetic musings on a nation at war. Ganz drapes the gallery walls with a procession of paper vines cut from C-prints that slowly morph from riots of orange nasturtiums into tangles of black mourning ribbons. Her dive into a distant moment of national unrest calls up ghosts that suddenly seem very real.
