Gus van Sant's highly anticipated biopic of Harvey Milk — the nation's first openly gay man to hold a major elected office — couldn't be timelier. After thousands of Americans protested the homophobic legislation of this past election, Milk reminds us that those who forget the past too often repeat its mistakes, while still offering plenty of what Milk himself gave the residents of San Francisco: hope. Sean Penn delivers a masterful performance, tracing Milk's transformation from a semi-closeted gay man to his eventual role as "the mayor of Castro Street." But the film would be nothing without an equally impressive supporting cast, which features Emile Hirsch as a young Cleve Jones and Josh Brolin as Dan White, Milk's professional rival and eventual murderer.
