Wang Bing's newest documentary — a brutal indictment of the sanctioned authoritarianism of Mao's China — derives its power solely from the continuous confession of its courageous subject, a former journalist and teacher named Fengming, who was sent to a labor camp as part of the "anti-rightist" campaigns. Intensely intimate, Wang's film presents Fengming's remarkable survivor's tale mostly in real time, though occasionally illustrates her narrative with photos. The director's austere approach, while formally extreme, offers a respectful and radical alternative to documentary filmmaking's conventional reduction of its subject to one of a series of talking heads.
