While dominating the Indian film industry for the past 40 years, Shabana Azmi emerged as a premier advocate for social reform. Her political activism is a direct extension of an artistic career that frequently calls on her to play strong, independent women in leading roles, and she fights tirelessly for the rights of minorities, slum dwellers, women, and AIDS victims. Her talk this evening will focus both on her achievements in film — five National Awards for Best Actress, the latest for her role in Godmother (1999) — and her recent work with Home of Hope on behalf of struggling young girls from her father's village of Mijawan.
