SFMOMA says…

While the dynamic between viewer and art object has traditionally been one of static separation, this major exhibit seeks to investigate a countercurrent in 20th-century art: instances in which the museum or gallery goer becomes a participant and collaborator in the creative process. From the early conceptual directives of artists such as John Cage and Hans Haacke to contemporary spins on the aleatotic from Felix Gonzales Torres, the Art of Participation presents reenactments of historic installations and performances alongside new work and features that let viewers directly shape the exhibit. Whether your choose to place an eBay bid to alter certain galleries, drink a beer with local artist Tom Marioni, or just passively observe, you'll still be involved.
