The San Francisco Film Society honors Quebec's quadricentennial with a cinematic survey of seven modern Quebecois pictures along with a '70s classic. Sophie Deraspe's disorienting mockumentary, Missing Victor Pellerin, follows the search for an elusive artist who burned his paintings and then vanished. As the real story becomes more distant, it's hard not to question the filmmaker's motives, even as viewers enjoy every ego-drenched moment of delusion. Another must-see is the serene and naturalistic Mon Oncle Antoine (1971), which was twice voted as the greatest Canadian film. Set in a '40s mining town on Christmas Eve, the period piece captures the nostalgia and awkward magic of adolescent self-discovery.
