Titration refers to the process in which small, incremental chemical alterations are applied to a solution until a visible change occurs. The chemistry term also provides a nice metaphor for Emil Lukas' newest collection of work, in which the gestural effects of abstract painting and sketching are achieved gradually by means other than use of a brush or the artist's hand. One set of works involves canvases overlaid with hundreds of pieces of stretched thread, with the resulting color fields evoking both Cy Twombly's scribbled reveries and Mark Rothko's gradated hues. The other set of work smirks towards Yves Klein's naked, paint-slathered women, but Lukas' synapse-like ink clouds instead trace the tiny movements of fly larvae.
