Artists' Television Access says…

Oedipus Rex walks into a Tokyo gay bar — no, it's not the start of a horrible joke, but the loose thread that holds together Matsumoto Toshio's Funeral Parade of Roses, an experimental thrill ride through Japan's gay underground of the '60s. The Oedipal center of Matsumoto's disjointed panorama of drag queens and mod kitsch is the doe-eyed androgyne Peter (who later starred as the court fool in Akira Kurosawa's Ran), who struggles with his inner demons while courting the affections of a drug-dealing cabaret manager and cat fighting with rival queens. Blending documentary, sly allusions to Warhol and Mekas, and flights of pure psychedelic fancy, Funeral Parade of Roses is, like its title, a lush and nonsensical portrait of its time.
