Portland's Blitzen Trapper stick closer to countrified indie rock this time around, drawing some obvious influence from Wilco on their latest release, Furr. The sextet's breakthrough record, last year's Wild Mountain Nation, was a collection of super lo-fi ditties that convincingly combined jangling Appalachian twang with the experimental playfulness of Pavement's Wowee Zowee and dirty riffs straight out of 1969. Since signing with iconic Seattle-based label Sub Pop last summer, the boys have refined their sound, putting polish on their pop songs at the expense of some of their raw grit.
