Sam approaches Robert seeking "somebody to spoil." Robert responds, "you found him." So goes the momentous meeting between iconoclastic curator/collector Sam Wagstaff and some-say-pornographic, others phenomenal, photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. James Crump's Black White + Gray documents the blurred boundaries between the icons' professional and personal relationship through the seesawing '70s, then outlines the trials leading up to their late-'80s deaths. Talking heads and fascinating footage help chronicle Wagstaff's conversion from full-blooded conservative to charismatic experimenter, the subcultural coteries he and Mapplethorpe membered, and Senator Jesse Helms' crusade to brand Mapplethorpe's erotic portraits obscene.
